Keep the attachment, review the file change
Replacement is useful when product or page references should keep the same attachment identity. Choose a new image of the same supported MIME type: JPEG, PNG, WebP or AVIF, subject to WordPress’s processing capabilities.
Image Manager creates a new source URL and regenerates the native image sizes. Supported references stored by attachment ID follow that identity. Literal file URLs saved in content or elsewhere need a separate review.

A recovery step comes before Apply
- Open the existing attachment and choose Replace image.
- Select the replacement and review the preview.
- Allow Image Manager to create and verify the private recovery snapshot.
- Apply the replacement, then inspect the affected pages and products.
Replacement requires ZipArchive and private writable storage outside public website paths. If the required snapshot cannot be verified, the replacement does not proceed.
Return to the previous source when needed
Undo uses the latest replacement checkpoint. It checks that later edits have not changed the attachment before restoring that checkpoint. Recovery controls also help you inspect an interrupted replacement.
Old native files are retained after replacement, and the new files are retained after undo, so existing direct URLs and cached pages can still refer to them. Download the recovery ZIP if you need a durable copy beyond the hosting’s temporary storage.
Know when a separate copy is a better fit
Use the image editor for a new crop or campaign-specific version that should have its own attachment. Use replacement when you want the existing attachment to represent a new source. Usage checking can help you inspect supported saved references before either decision.
